'STAR WARS' AT 40: JUNGLE WATCHER!

Preparing to shoot the sentry scene at Tikal, as the small crew erect the tower.

Early 1977. A small second unit team from ILM, headed up by Richard Edlund, arrives at Guatemala to film location scenery of the Tikal National Park and several moments requiring a Rebel sentry high atop his tower keeping an eye out for the arriving Millennium Falcon. Because of the perilous nature of being high up in the erected tower, Lorne Peterson was selected to play the role, primarily because he was the only single member of the group at that time!

A small amount of unused location footage from this sequence would make its way into The Phantom Menace, for a landing scene set on Naboo.
